Restraints and Challenges
Low water availability , limited rainfall , limited arable land are the biggest restraints for agriculture production in the country.The area is dry and it has stayed like this for a long period and it is very tough to practice traditional ways of farming is such conditions.Very few parts of the country have above average conditions and support farming and hence the production has been low in the country.Moreover the desert storms add to the worry and harm the produce. Due to these reasons farmers have incurred huge losses in the past which has led to people moving away from farming and agriculture.Such harsh conditions restrict the growth of dairy as well as fishery consumables & meat market as it is tough for the animals also to cope with such conditions.

The Government of Bahrain is encouraging agricultural companies to invest in foreign countries that have a comparative advantage in producing certain crops and import their products back into Bahrain.The Bahrain government has developed a ?National Action Plan? to encourage healthy lifestyles, covering a number of programs that include increasing the percentage of people consuming fruit and vegetables by 30% and to ensure 3-5 fruit & vegetable intakes, every day.Moreover government is lending its support to dairy as well as fishery consumables & meat market as they want to reduce their imports and become self sufficient in the future.

?New fruits importation law in Bahrain: The new law states that fruits and vegetable importers will be required to supply full 12-month schedule of planned imports from certified suppliers and certificates of origin or a health clearance certificate with every order coming into the country.
?Bahrain government plans more subsidy cuts: The country has cut subsidies for meat and plans to cut subsidies for water and electricity, which would have an adverse effect on domestic vegetable and fruit producers.
