Restraints and Challenges
Qatar is a net importer of food products. Low water availability , limited rainfall , limited arable land are the biggest restraints for agriculture production in the country. The area is dry and it has stayed like this for a long period and it is very tough to practice traditional ways of farming is such conditions. Moreover the desert storms add to the worry and harm the produce. Due to these reasons farmers have incurred huge losses in the past which has led to people moving away from farming and agriculture.Such harsh conditions restrict the growth of dairy as well as fishery consumables & meat market as it is tough for the animals also to cope with such conditions.

Opportunities
Agriculture production of Qatar constitutes of mainly vegetables and fruits and other crops in a minor quantity. Qatar is hoping to boost its production by setting up 1400 farms covering 45,000 acres of land in next 5 years. Most of the farms will produce vegetables and fruits and will use hydroponic technology for production. Government is giving priority to production of fruits and vegetables as they are less water and soil intensive. Moreover government is lending its support to dairy as well as fishery consumables & meat market as they want to reduce their imports and become self sufficient in the future.

New Developments
?Qatar has decided to maintain low levels of production, continue its focus on importing food through well-formed channels and to purchase land in Africa and Asia for the cultivation of agricultural produce and cereals.
?Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA) began work on the Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project in 2012. The mega reservoirs will allow Doha to store 7 days? worth of potable water, based on the expected consumption rate by 2036. Since Qatar faces a water scarcity, this initiative solves the problem; thereby, adding to the increasing overall domestic production of fruits and vegetables.
