Analysis of Communication Sector in Iran (2017 - 2022)

There has been a big communication boom going on in Iran since 2009. The number of internet users has almost tripled since 2009 and now close to 32% of the total population are connected with the Internet which compares very favorably with its neighbors like Syria, Yemen who have 26.2% and 20% of the population connected with the Internet respectively. By absolute number of users Iran is the largest market in the Middle East by a fair margin.

Iran has a relatively very well developed fixed line user telephone base where 39% of the population has a connection. Although the growth in the telecommunication industry has been marred by too much government interference and sanctions, still it is relatively very well developed and offers huge scope for further growth. Mobile Penetration in Iran is at a high 136% which is very impressive, but the most important point to note is that most of the Mobile Devices are smuggled into the country, so with the lifting of the sanctions the Mobile Phone producers face the prospect of a massive market with booming demand. The biggest opportunity though is in the data services market which is expected to grow at a CAGR of close to 36.7% in the next five years, this growth will be propelled by the surge in usage of Smart Phone Devices. The 3G Subscriptions are expected to reach 20 million by mid 2016 which represents a more than 100% rise in number.

Overall Iran?s Communications Industry despite the sanctions, politics has done relatively well but still there is huge potential to grow and the market offers massive potential , and one factor which is the most promising for the communications industry is that more than half of the population of Iran is under the age of 25, thus Companies would do well to set up their bases in Iran as soon as possible.

With a population of 78.19 million, Iran is a promising market for communications and technology. Even though Iran has faced economic difficulties due to the sanctions imposed upon it; the country has maintained a per capita income of USD 16,463 which puts Iran into the category of an Upper Middle Income Nation. The Communication Market in Iran is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX.XX% till 2020.
