Analysis of the Fisheries and Aquaculture sector in United Arab Emirates - Fishes and Invertebrates with Production, Consumption, Import and Export Data and Trends (2017 - 2022)

With a GDP of USD 402 billion and a population of 9.45 million, UAE is one of the largest countries in the GCC. UAE boasts of the 3rd highest production in GCC countries in terms of capture fishing, with production in 2013 totaling 80,426 metric tons. It is one of the pioneers of aquaculture. The country has an abundance of lagoons, bays, and creeks encircled by mangrove swamps, which are an ideal spawning ground for fish. The market for fisheries and aquaculture in the UAE was valued at USD XX million and is expected to increase at a CAGR of XX% over 2016-2022.

Drivers
UAE?s per capita fish consumption is 24.5 kg per annum. Meanwhile, an increase in population, by as much as 125% between 2006 and 2014, largely made up of protein preferring young population and expats, further drives demand. Other than that the demographic location of UAE, which occupies a strategic position at the southern end of the gulf also aids the growth, as the daily catch of the fishermen lands into a large number of villages and towns on both the east coast and gulf coast.

Restraints and Challenges
Constraints to this sector include a lack of knowledge dissemination, poor management of resources due to the ?tragedy of the commons?, and a lack of labor incidence from the Philippines, Bangladesh, and India. A number of native artisanal fishermen and women have abandoned fishing for more lucrative livelihoods as capture catch becomes progressively sparser. It is for this reason that aquaculture measures are being renewed through MERD (Marine Environment Research Department) after a decision by the government to preserve naturally occurring fish and to diversify the economy given the high demand.

Opportunities
MERD?s initiatives are steering the fishing ecosystem in the UAE in the right direction. Companies for fish processing services and fish rearing management, primarily through aquaculture can conduct business in the UAE under PPPs, available through tenders floated by the Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW). In addition, the UAE administration recently announced several large RAS and offshore pisciculture plans.

Key Developments
? A new project producing 40 tons of tilapia using waste water by a neighboring plant, which is usually dumped in the desert, as fertilizer for vegetables grown in parallel is being piloted in UAE. The farm is 4500 square meters and works on recirculation aquaculture, using principles of aquaponics.
? A new project in Masdar City plans to combine the rearing of fish through aquaculture and the production of biofuel. Consisting of 20,000 sq. meters, this project will use ?waste-nutrients? from aquaculture ponds to feed halophyte plants (salt-tolerant plants), which after processing shall turn into jet fuel.
? As of 2013, the company Emirates Aqua Tech began operations in the world?s largest caviar farm built in Abu Dhabi. This plant is now capable of producing 700 tons of sturgeon and 25 tons of caviar in a year. These fish are produced in an environmentally safe manner and has been embraced by the FDA. Caviar from this region, called YASA caviar is now available globally at market competitive prices for fish connoisseurs.
