Population growth, altering consumption patterns, continual modernization of the food value chain and the booming tourism industry are some of the key drivers that are aiding the growth of the dairy industry. Rising health awareness and an evolving taste for a westernized diet, primarily by the increasing expatriate population, are stirring a change in the region?s dietary habits. These factors are creating a market for international and organic foods which also have a positive effect on the growth of the dairy industry.
Increasing focus on reducing the dependence on dairy imports, thereby encouraging higher domestic production
Historically, Oman has been quite dependent on the imports of food stuffs to meet the local demand. With an aim to reduce this dependency on imports, various steps are being taken by the government to support and encourage local production.
Similar to other GCC countries, Oman is also investing in the dairy industry. Mazoon Dairy Company plans to build a major dairy farm with a capital expenditure of OMR 100 million to achieve self-sufficiency in dairy production in Oman. It has started major initiatives to build the project in a large area in Buraimi. The proposed integrated joint venture dairy project plans to start with approximately 4,000 cows in 2017, which will expand to a herd size of 25,000 in 2026. The company will produce approximately 202 million liters in 2026, which will go up to 985 million liters in 2040.
With the undertaking of such initiatives and projects, the intention is to reduce the import dependency from 69% (2014) to 13% in 2026.
