Rising health awareness and an evolving taste for a westernized diet, primarily by the increasing expatriate population, are stirring a change in the region?s dietary habits. Historically, Qatar has been quite dependent on the imports of food stuffs to meet the local demand. With an aim to reduce this dependency on imports, various steps are being taken by the government to support and encourage local production.
Similar to other GCC countries, Qatar is also investing in the dairy industry. Qatar authorities recently announced a major dairy venture, for which the government has allocated 62,000 Sq. m and 500 hectares of land for production of fodder to support the livelihood of livestock. This ambitious project to produce milk and other dairy products locally, is being worked on by the Ministry of Economy and Commerce in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment.
As a result, though Qatar remains dependent on imports, there has been a significant increase in the domestic production.
